Paper 101
LEARN ABOUT THE PRINT INDUSTRY

COATED PAPER:
Paper is treated with a layer of pigment designed to improve the papers finish and smoothness.

UNCOATED PAPER:
Paper is not treated for smoothness and characteristically absorbs more ink, increasing the dot gain for a less crisp printed image.

  • All paper types offered are coated on two sides, C2S, except for stock choices offered for Letterhead/Stationary and where otherwise listed as a C1S, which is paper only coated on one side, offered for postcards and greeting cards to allow for addressing applications.

PAPER FINISH:
Refers to the visual and tactile characteristics’ of the paper. We offer Gloss, Silk, and uncoated Matte. Frosted is an additional finish available for some job types that resembles the look of a fine pearl. The finish is the surface characteristics of the paper, such as how the paper feels; a smooth feel, such as glossy cover or slightly rough feel, as with a Matte finish. Gloss paper has a glossy appearance, where Silk finish is compared best to satin appearance, and sometime referred to as a ‘coated matte finish’.A Gloss finish produces a shiny and reflective surface. An uncoated Matte finish gives a dull appearance and is more porous, having an ink absorbing characteristic. Our Frosted is a specialty paper that has a soft sheen or pearl like finish in an off white color.

UV COATING:
This is an additional process offered which is applied after printing has completed. A glossy coating is applied to increase the reflectivity of the ink and paper below, making the page look polished, as if liquid, adding depth and dimension to the printed piece. It should be noted when a Matte stock is used, the effect is barely noticeable, and not recommended. Once a piece is UV coated, it should not be addressed due to inks not properly adhering to the coating. UV coating can only be applied to cover weight stocks.
